In Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, a 33-year-old engineer committed suicide after accusing his wife and in-laws of harassment. Mohit Yadav made a video in which he claimed that his in-laws had threatened him and made up cases against him. In the video, he stated, “Throw my ashes into the drain if I do not get justice even after my death.”
On Thursday, Yadav had checked into the Jolly Hotel, which is located outside the Etawah train station. The following morning, he remained in his room. According to Superintendent of Police (City) Abhay Nath Tripathi, the hotel workers discovered him hanging in the evening.
A resident of Auraiya district, Yadav worked as a field engineer in a cement company. He and Priya were in a relationship for seven years after they got married in 2023.
Priya was pregnant when she secured a private teaching job in Bihar two months ago, but her mother made her abort the child, Yadav alleged in the video. His mother-in-law also kept all her jewellery with her, he claimed. He said he had no dowry demand when they got married, but his wife threatened to file false cases against all his family members.
“My wife threatened to get my family into a dowry case if I did not register my home and belongings in her name. In the video, he stated, “Her brother threatened to kill me after her father, Manoj Kumar, filed a false complaint.” He asserted that his wife’s relatives had been supporting her ever since they began arguing daily.
Yadav apologized to his parents at the end of the video and asked them to dispose of his ashes in the trash if he does not receive justice after his passing.
He also reflected on the absence of a law to protect men from false complaints filed by women. “By the time you get this video, I will be gone from this world. I wouldn’t have taken this step if there were a law for men. I couldn’t tolerate the harassment by my wife and her family,” he said in the video.
According to his brother Tareen Pratap, Yadav had left for Kota but stopped in Etawah. On Friday morning, the family was astonished to see his footage on their phones.
We are waiting on Priya Yadav and her family to comment.
The event contributes to the rising call for legislation that shields males from unfounded accusations made by women. Men’s rights groups were alarmed by a series of similar occurrences that had occurred following the suicide of Atul Subhash, a Bengaluru techie who claimed that his wife had falsely accused him of crimes.
