The National Health Authority (NHA), Government e-Marketplace (GeM), and Public Sector Bank Alliance (PSBA) are implementing AWS technology to create creative, scalable, and secure solutions that will propel India’s digital transformation, according to a September 25 announcement from Amazon Web Services (AWS) India Private Limited.

Supporting NHA’s mission to create an open digital health ecosystem

In order to create an open digital health ecosystem in India and revolutionize healthcare at the population level, the NHA is expanding on AWS. Utilizing the Government of India’s flagship programs, such as the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), it seeks to provide health coverage to over 550 million people and construct an integrated digital health infrastructure for India’s 1.4 billion residents.

In order to manage beneficiary identity and claim transaction management in a scalable, flexible, and secure manner, the NHA is utilizing the capability of AWS services to develop essential applications such as the Beneficiary identity System and Transaction Management System, which are important components of the AB-PMJAY program. More than 30,000 hospitals have been accredited, and more than 354 million Ayushman cards have been issued thus far. In addition, the PMJAY has covered nearly 68 million hospitalizations in eight union territories and 25 states.

Empowering GeM to build the world’s largest public procurement platform

Because of AWS’s reliable, scalable, and secure cloud architecture, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), the second-largest public procurement platform in the world, uses it. GeM makes it possible for government agencies and the public sector to acquire products and services in a transparent, efficient, and inclusive manner. In addition to providing the marketplace, company operations, analysis, customer assistance, and payment processing, GeM’s e-procurement features, such as direct purchase, bidding, reverse auctions, price matching, and demand aggregation, are based on AWS cloud services.

GeM makes it possible for 1.5 million interactions daily, 9,000 page views per second, and an average daily transaction value of around ₹1,000 crore in gross merchandise value. GeM is implementing artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI to offer customer-centric services and empower customers to make data-driven decisions. The company’s technology vision is to digitize, automate, and change its platform in order to increase efficiency and improve user experience.

Cloud services for India’s public sector banks

Additionally, AWS has been contracted by the PSBA, an umbrella organization made up of twelve public sector banks, to provide India’s public sector banks with adaptable and efficient cloud computing services. As envisioned in the government’s Enhanced Access and Service Excellence (EASE) strategy, the PSBA offers significant customer-oriented services.

Viksit Bharat 2047

The cloud company presented these instances of assisting the nation’s public sector clients during the AWS Empower India event in New Delhi on September 25. This year’s event’s subject, Viksit Bharat 2047, embodies the Indian government’s goal of making the country a developed nation by the year 2047, the centennial of its independence.

Chief Technology Officer Dr. Werner Vogels of Amazon.com gave the keynote address at the event. He stated, “A lot of our customers, from small startups to large enterprises, are looking for ways to maximize their cloud investments and minimize waste.” This is particularly important in India, where creating scalable, effective digital systems to serve 1.4 billion people is a struggle.

“The Frugal Architect approach provides fundamental ideas for creating modern, sustainable, and cost-conscious structures, transforming limitations into opportunities for creativity. I am motivated by the way Indian organizations and builders are ready to adopt these ideas and develop creative answers that not only solve pressing problems but also set the stage for long-term, sustainable growth,” he continued.

“India’s public sector is laying the foundation to achieve the government’s vision of a Viksit Bharat 2047, by developing population-scale initiatives, building on cloud and AI technology,” said Pankaj Gupta, Leader – Public Sector, AWS India Private Limited, as he spoke to the audience. For instance, revolutionary developments in our sectors of government, healthcare, and education are enhancing India’s capacity to become a digital nation and a global technological sandbox.

Whether it is providing improved healthcare, expanding access to high-quality education, boosting financial inclusion, or boosting the chances of small businesses and startups, we at AWS are privileged to co-innovate with our customers to help them accomplish their goals, he said.

A few success cases were highlighted by Pankaj during their discussion. The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) uses AWS to operate its citizen-scale skilling portal, Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH), he explained. Serving 800 million users nationwide, SIDH aims to generate a skilled labor force and support the government’s vision of a fully developed India.

The speaker emphasized the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ (MoHUA) Swachchata App, a mobile-based grievance redressal tool that supports the Swachh Bharat Mission of the Indian government. Real-time geographic information systems (GIS), analytics-based dashboards, business intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and drone-based sanitation asset monitoring are all powered by cutting-edge AWS technology.

Another revolutionary example of AWS installation in India was Co-WIN. AWS enables DigiLocker, which gives individuals access to genuine digital papers at any time and from any location, in addition to Co-WIN, which facilitates easy registration, real-time tracking of vaccination status, and certificate generation for millions.

PhysicsWallah, an edtech leader, has partnered with AWS to use them as a primary technology enabler. It gives them the cloud computing foundation they need to develop, test, and refine their solutions in order to provide millions of students with excellent online and offline learning experiences and expand their companies.

Investing in India’s digital future

With over $3.7 billion invested in cloud infrastructure between 2016 and 2022, AWS has demonstrated a strong commitment to India’s digital future by fostering innovation and empowering regional companies and organizations. Building on this foundation, AWS intends to further cement its position as a major facilitator of India’s technological development by investing an additional $12.7 billion in cloud infrastructure in India by 2030. With the goal of assisting the country’s transition into a worldwide digital powerhouse, this combined investment is among the biggest in India’s tech sector.
